Lanzarote Firefighters Face a Busy 24 Hours

Lanzarote firefighters have had a particularly busy period, with a series of emergency call-outs across the north of the island involving road accidents and fires.

The incidents, which took place around Guatiza, Tabayesco, Máguez and Muñique, brought the work of the island's emergency services into focus during a busy 24-hour period.

Two road incidents in the north

One of the most serious-looking incidents involved a vehicle in Tabayesco, in the municipality of Haría. At around midnight on Tuesday 15 September, a car left the road near the Chafariz bend and collided with a wall bordering a ravine. The vehicle subsequently caught fire.

The two people travelling in the car managed to get out before firefighters arrived. They were assessed at the scene by medical staff from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC), and hospital treatment was not required.

Firefighters used water and foam to extinguish the vehicle fire before checking the car for remaining hot spots. The vehicle was then moved to a safe position, while the area was secured and debris was cleared from the road. Guardia Civil officers and the SUC were also involved in the response.

Only a few hours later, another vehicle left the road on the LZ-1 at Guatiza, in the municipality of Teguise. The incident occurred near kilometre 11. The sole occupant had already left the vehicle and was being attended by medical personnel when the firefighters arrived.

The emergency crews assisted the medical team, disconnected the vehicle's battery and helped clear the road. Police Local officers were also at the scene.

A fire in Máguez

The emergency activity was not limited to road accidents. Firefighters also attended an incident in Máguez, in Haría, where a fire was reported in the patio of a property.

According to information published following the intervention, a woman was already attempting to contain the flames with a hose when the firefighters arrived. The fire was brought under control and the area was left secure.

The incident is separate from an earlier Máguez house fire reported on 7 September, when an elderly resident suffered burns and was taken to hospital, so the two incidents should not be confused.

Fire also reported in Muñique

The Consorcio de Seguridad y Emergencias de Lanzarote also recorded a solar fire in Muñique, in the municipality of Teguise, on 16 September. The official emergency service listing confirms the location as Calle Trilla in Muñique.
At the time of writing, no other information has been released.

What does this mean for visitors and residents?

If you come across an accident or emergency while travelling around Lanzarote, avoid stopping in a way that creates another hazard, give emergency vehicles plenty of room and follow instructions from police or other emergency personnel. In an emergency in Spain, call 112.

The latest incidents did not result in serious injuries in the Tabayesco and Guatiza crashes, and the firefighters were able to bring the reported fires under control. Their rapid response also helped make the affected areas safe again and restore normal road conditions where necessary.

Lanzarote's emergency services work across the whole island, from the tourist resorts to smaller rural communities. While these incidents are part of everyday emergency work, they can have a noticeable impact in smaller villages where roads and access routes are more limited.

For tourists searching for Lanzarote travel advice, Lanzarote road safety information or local Lanzarote news, keeping up to date with official emergency information can be particularly useful when planning journeys around the island.
