Lanzarote Heat Alert: Temperatures Could Reach 37°C on Wednesday

Lanzarote is heading into another spell of very warm weather, with AEMET issuing a yellow heat alert for Wednesday 23 September 2026.

The warning covers Lanzarote and La Graciosa and is scheduled to run from 11:00am until 6:59pm on Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to reach around 34°C across parts of the island, while some localised areas in the south could climb as high as 37°C.

For anyone visiting Lanzarote this week, or living here year-round, it is a useful reminder that September can still bring seriously hot conditions to the island.

What is the Lanzarote weather forecast for Wednesday?

According to the latest AEMET information, the hottest part of Wednesday will be during the daytime, when temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-30s.

AEMET's beach forecasts also show the heat around popular coastal areas. At Los Pocillos, for example, the forecast maximum for Wednesday is 34°C, with a sea temperature of around 24°C and a maximum UV index of 8. At Guacimeta, the forecast is also 34°C, with the sea around 25°C.

That combination of high temperatures and strong sunshine means visitors should not assume that the Atlantic breeze will provide enough protection from the sun.

Why is Lanzarote getting so hot?

The current weather pattern is also being accompanied by haze, with forecasts indicating that calima may continue to affect Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

AEMET's wider forecast has indicated rising temperatures across the island, with the increase potentially more noticeable in inland, southern and western areas. Conditions can vary considerably between different parts of Lanzarote, so the temperature you experience in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Arrecife or inland areas may not be identical.

The south of Lanzarote is particularly important to watch during this episode because the highest localised temperatures are expected there.

Will Lanzarote stay hot after Wednesday?

The heat is not expected to disappear immediately.

Thursday 24 September is also forecast to remain warm, with maximum temperatures of up to around 34°C and overnight minimums between approximately 21°C and 24°C. Haze is also expected to remain in the area.

For tourists planning beach days, excursions or walks around Lanzarote, it is therefore worth checking the latest forecast rather than relying on the usual September expectations.

Tips for coping with hot weather in Lanzarote

If you are visiting Lanzarote during the heat alert, a few simple precautions can make a big difference:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel particularly thirsty.
• Use high-factor sun protection and reapply it regularly.
• Wear a hat, sunglasses and lightweight clothing.
• Try to avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the afternoon.
• Take regular breaks in the shade or somewhere cool.
• Be particularly careful with young children, older people and anyone who may be more vulnerable to high temperatures.
• Never leave children, vulnerable people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
• If you are heading out on a Lanzarote walk or excursion, take water with you and check the conditions beforehand.

What does a yellow weather alert mean?

A yellow alert does not mean that normal life on Lanzarote has to stop. It means that weather conditions have reached a level where people should take extra care and pay attention to official advice.

For tourists, that might simply mean changing the timing of a beach trip, spending more time in the shade or avoiding the strongest midday sunshine. For residents, it is a reminder to keep an eye on the latest Lanzarote weather forecast, particularly if working outdoors.

Enjoy Lanzarote, but respect the heat

Lanzarote is famous for its year-round sunshine, but the island's volcanic landscape and lack of natural shade in many areas can make high temperatures feel particularly intense.

Wednesday's Lanzarote heat alert is expected to be short-lived, but with temperatures potentially reaching 37°C in localised southern areas, sensible preparation is worthwhile.

Whether you are staying in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Arrecife or elsewhere on the island, keep checking the latest AEMET forecast and official weather warnings as conditions can change.
