Lanzarote Heatwave Continues as Temperatures Soar Across the Island
Tourists visiting Lanzarote this weekend are being advised to prepare for some of the hottest weather the island has experienced so far this year, with temperatures expected to climb well above normal for May during the current Canary Islands heatwave.
According to forecasts from AEMET and local weather services, temperatures across Lanzarote are expected to reach between 32°C and 36°C today, particularly in inland and southern parts of the island where the heat is most intense. Coastal resorts including Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise are likely to feel slightly cooler thanks to sea breezes, although conditions will still remain very hot and humid throughout the afternoon.
Tomorrow is expected to stay extremely warm, with highs again forecast to sit in the low-to-mid 30s across much of the island. Forecasters say the heatwave is being strengthened by hot air moving north from the Sahara, combined with light winds and calima conditions that may bring a hazy sky and reduced visibility at times.
Spain’s national weather agency has already issued yellow heat warnings for Lanzarote and neighbouring islands including Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, warning that temperatures could exceed seasonal averages by more than 10 degrees.
Despite the intense heat, the weather is expected to remain dry with long hours of sunshine, making it ideal for beach days, poolside relaxation and evening walks along the marina once temperatures begin to cool after sunset. UV levels are currently extremely high, however, and visitors are strongly advised to wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water and avoid prolonged sun exposure during the hottest hours between midday and 4pm.
The current heatwave is part of a wider weather system affecting much of Spain and Western Europe, with several regions already reporting record-breaking May temperatures
