Lanzarote Remains Under Yellow Heat Warning as Temperatures Continue to Rise
Lanzarote remains under a yellow weather alert today as unusually high temperatures continue affecting the island, with forecasters warning that parts of Lanzarote could reach up to 37°C over the coming days.
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has extended its yellow heat warning across Lanzarote and neighbouring islands as the Canary Islands experience what meteorologists are calling one of the earliest significant heat events of the year.
The warning covers interior and southern areas of Lanzarote, where temperatures are expected to remain significantly above seasonal averages. Weather experts have described the conditions as “extraordinarily high for May”, with hot air moving in from North Africa contributing to the spike in temperatures.
Residents and tourists across popular resort areas including Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, and Arrecife are being advised to take precautions during the hottest parts of the day. Authorities recommend staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and checking on vulnerable people including the elderly and young children.
The Government of the Canary Islands has also activated pre-alert measures linked to the increased risk of wildfires due to the combination of heat, dry conditions, and calima affecting parts of the archipelago.
Although Lanzarote is well known for its year-round sunshine, the current temperatures are notably higher than average for late May. The heatwave is expected to continue into at least Tuesday, with AEMET monitoring conditions closely.
Tourists planning beach visits or outdoor activities are being encouraged to use sunscreen, remain in shaded areas during midday hours, and drink plenty of water as UV levels remain extremely high across the island.
