Lanzarote Rescue: Five People Safe After Zodiac Suffers Engine Failure Near Playa Blanca
A family outing on the water ended with a rescue operation off the south of Lanzarote on Saturday afternoon, September 26, after a small inflatable boat suffered an engine failure close to the coast.
Five people were aboard the zodiac — three adults and two children — when the boat lost engine power near Los Charcones, one of the rugged coastal areas around Playa Blanca.
The incident happened at approximately 3:15pm, with the boat located around 300 metres from the shoreline.
Emergency services respond
The emergency was reported through CECOES, the Canary Islands' emergency coordination centre. Local Police, firefighters and Maritime Rescue were sent to assist the occupants and secure the vessel.
The five people were safely assisted and, importantly, none of the occupants required medical treatment.
Firefighters also helped with the safety of the tow as the damaged boat was taken towards Marina Rubicón, the marina at Playa Blanca.
No injuries reported
Although an engine failure at sea can quickly become a worrying situation, particularly when children are involved, this incident ended without injuries.
The successful operation highlights the importance of contacting the emergency services promptly if a boat experiences mechanical problems or becomes unable to manoeuvre safely.
For visitors enjoying a boat trip around Lanzarote, it is also a reminder that the island's coastline can be exposed and conditions can change. Even relatively close to shore, a disabled boat can be difficult to control, especially if wind or waves increase.
Los Charcones and the south of Lanzarote
Los Charcones is a rugged stretch of volcanic coastline south of Playa Blanca, known for its natural rock pools and dramatic Atlantic scenery. The area is popular with people looking for a quieter and more natural side of Lanzarote.
The rescue took place close to this coastline, with the vessel ultimately being brought towards Marina Rubicón.
A reminder about sea safety in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a popular destination for boat trips, sailing, fishing, diving and other water activities, and the island's coastline attracts both tourists and local residents throughout the year.
Mechanical problems can happen without warning, so anyone heading out on the water should make sure the vessel is properly equipped, has appropriate safety equipment and that everyone on board knows what to do in an emergency.
If a serious problem develops at sea, contacting the emergency services early can help rescuers locate the vessel and assess the safest way to assist.
In this latest incident near Playa Blanca, the response from emergency crews ended with all five occupants safely brought ashore and no medical assistance required.
The incident is a useful reminder that while Lanzarote's Atlantic coastline offers spectacular opportunities to explore the island from the water, sensible preparation and respect for the sea remain essential.
