Lanzarote Road Closures: Yaiza Traffic Disruption on Sunday 4 October

Visitors and residents travelling around the south of Lanzarote this Sunday, 4 October 2026, should be aware of temporary road restrictions linked to the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote.

The island’s annual cycling event returns for its third edition on 3 and 4 October, with the second stage taking place on Sunday. The event is organised by Club La Santa and crosses all seven municipalities of Lanzarote over two days.

What is happening in Yaiza?

On Sunday morning, the cycling route heads south from Puerto del Carmen before travelling through some of Lanzarote’s best-known volcanic landscapes, including La Geria, Femés, Playa Blanca and the Timanfaya area, before continuing north towards Tinajo and the finish at Club La Santa.

According to the official traffic notice issued by Club La Santa, roads in the municipality of Yaiza will be affected between approximately 08:30 and 12:15.

The official notice divides the Yaiza restrictions into two periods:

• Yaiza: 08:30–11:15
• Yaiza: 11:15–12:15

The notice describes the affected areas as different roads and streets within the municipality rather than providing a street-by-street list.

Other Lanzarote road closures on Sunday

The traffic restrictions are not limited to Yaiza.

• Tías: 08:00–09:30
• Yaiza: 08:30–12:15
• Tinajo: 10:30–13:15

This means anyone planning an early Sunday journey across the island should allow additional time and pay close attention to temporary signs, barriers and instructions from traffic and event personnel.

Travelling to Playa Blanca?

If you are staying in or travelling towards Playa Blanca, the cycling route passes through the southern part of the island before heading onwards towards Yaiza and the Timanfaya area.

Drivers should not assume that every road in Playa Blanca will be closed for the whole morning. Instead, expect temporary, moving restrictions as the cyclists pass through and follow the signs and instructions in place on the day.

Planning a trip to Timanfaya?

Visitors heading towards Timanfaya on Sunday morning should also plan ahead. Stage 2 of the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote includes the road from the Timanfaya area towards Mancha Blanca, and the wider event traffic arrangements are designed to allow the cyclists to travel safely through the island.

If Timanfaya is part of your plans, leaving earlier than usual or checking local traffic information before setting off is sensible.

What is the Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote?

The Vuelta Ciclista a Lanzarote is a non-competitive cycling event designed for both amateur and experienced cyclists. The 2026 edition covers 189 kilometres over two stages.

Stage 1 on Saturday 3 October runs from Club La Santa to Puerto del Carmen, covering 115 kilometres.

Stage 2 on Sunday 4 October starts at 08:30 from Plaza de Las Naciones in Puerto del Carmen and covers 74 kilometres before finishing at Club La Santa.

The route takes riders through some of Lanzarote’s most spectacular scenery, including volcanic landscapes, vineyards and coastal roads. Club La Santa says the event is supported by the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the seven municipalities involved.

The event is also expected to bring plenty of cycling activity to the island, with more than 600 cyclists taking part according to the organisers’ traffic information.

A reminder for drivers and visitors

The road restrictions are temporary and are being introduced to help the event pass safely through Lanzarote.

If you are driving on Sunday morning, allow extra time for your journey, especially if you are travelling between Puerto del Carmen, Yaiza, Playa Blanca, Femés, La Geria or the Timanfaya area.

Do not try to drive around barriers or follow a route that has been temporarily restricted. Follow official diversion signs and instructions from police, traffic officers and event personnel.

For tourists, this should be a relatively straightforward disruption if you know about it in advance. For residents, the main thing is to factor the cycling route into any Sunday-morning plans.

Lanzarote is used to hosting major sporting events, and the Vuelta Ciclista is another opportunity to see the island’s roads and volcanic scenery from a very different perspective.
