Lanzarote’s Population Continues to Grow as the Island Passes 170,000 Residents
Lanzarote has reached another important milestone, with the island’s resident population now exceeding 170,000 people for the first time. The latest figures highlight the steady growth that has taken place over recent years, reflecting Lanzarote’s increasing popularity as both a place to live and a world-class holiday destination.
The island has welcomed thousands of new residents over the past year alone, continuing a trend that has seen the population rise consistently. Much of this growth has been driven by people relocating from mainland Spain and overseas, attracted by Lanzarote’s year-round climate, employment opportunities, and quality of life. Foreign nationals now account for around a quarter of the island’s population.
What Does Population Growth Mean for Lanzarote?
For residents, a growing population brings both opportunities and challenges.
On the positive side, more people can support local businesses, encourage investment, and help create jobs across sectors such as hospitality, construction, healthcare and retail. Demand for services continues to increase, helping the island’s economy remain strong throughout the year.
However, continued growth also places additional pressure on housing, healthcare, schools, roads, water resources and other public services. These are issues that local authorities continue to face as they plan for the island’s future.
Tourism Still Plays a Major Role
Although more people are choosing to make Lanzarote their permanent home, tourism remains the island’s economic engine.
On any given day, tens of thousands of visitors are staying on the island alongside the resident population. In popular tourist municipalities such as Tías and Yaiza, the number of tourists can rival—or even exceed—the number of local residents during busy periods.
This combination of residents and visitors means the island’s daily population is often far higher than the official census suggests, particularly during peak holiday seasons.
A Different Lanzarote Than Two Decades Ago
At the beginning of the 2000s, Lanzarote’s population was well below 100,000. Today, it has grown dramatically, illustrating how much the island has changed over the past 25 years.
Despite this growth, Lanzarote continues to attract people looking for its unique blend of volcanic landscapes, beautiful beaches, outdoor lifestyle and relaxed pace of life.
Looking Ahead
Population growth is expected to remain an important topic in the years ahead. Balancing economic success with sustainable development will be one of the key challenges facing Lanzarote.
For both residents and visitors, the island’s appeal remains as strong as ever—but ensuring that growth is carefully managed will be essential to preserving everything that makes Lanzarote such a special place
