Lanzarote’s Population in 2025: Where Residents Come From

Lanzarote has long been known as one of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations, but it’s also becoming an increasingly international place to call home. New figures based on the 2025 population census published by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) reveal just how diverse the island’s population has become, with residents originating from dozens of countries around the world.

For tourists, these figures help explain why you’ll hear so many different languages while exploring the island. For residents, they highlight how Lanzarote continues to evolve into a multicultural community.

Spain Still Makes Up the Majority

As expected, the largest group of people living in Lanzarote were born in Spain, with approximately 109,467 residents.

However, the island’s international population is substantial, reflecting Lanzarote’s appeal for workers, retirees, business owners and families looking to enjoy its climate and lifestyle.

The Largest International Communities

According to the published figures, some of the largest overseas-born communities include:

  • Colombia: 13,132
  • Morocco: 6,030
  • United Kingdom: 5,699
  • Italy: 3,315
  • Venezuela: 2,450
  • Germany: 2,153
  • Argentina: 1,906
  • Ecuador: 1,709
  • Dominican Republic: 1,508
  • Peru: 1,170
  • Uruguay: 1,030
  • India: 977
  • Romania: 942
  • Ireland: 905

These numbers are based on country of birth, not nationality. That means many people may now hold Spanish citizenship while still being counted according to where they were born.

Why Is Lanzarote So International?

There are several reasons why people from around the world choose to settle in Lanzarote:

  • A warm climate throughout the year.
  • Employment opportunities linked to tourism and hospitality.
  • A relaxed lifestyle.
  • Excellent air connections with mainland Europe.
  • A growing international community, making it easier for newcomers to settle.

Many residents first visited the island as tourists before deciding to make Lanzarote their permanent home.

What Does This Mean for Visitors?

For holidaymakers, Lanzarote’s diverse population means you’ll often find:

  • Restaurants serving cuisine from around the world.
  • Multilingual staff in hotels, bars and attractions.
  • International supermarkets and speciality shops.
  • Cultural festivals celebrating different nationalities.

Despite this diversity, Lanzarote has retained its distinctive Canarian identity, traditions and welcoming atmosphere.

A Growing Island

Recent ISTAC data also shows that Lanzarote remains one of the fastest-growing islands in the Canary Islands, with population growth continuing to outpace many other parts of the archipelago. Population increases have been driven largely by migration rather than natural population growth.

As the island continues to grow, balancing housing, healthcare, transport and public services alongside tourism will remain an important challenge for local authorities.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’ve lived here for decades or you’re visiting for the first time, Lanzarote is home to a remarkably diverse community. People from across Europe, Latin America, Africa and beyond have helped shape the island into the vibrant destination it is today.
