Lanzarote Set for a Very Hot Start to the Week as Heat Warnings Are Issued

Lanzarote is heading into another spell of very high temperatures, with yellow weather warnings for extreme heat in place as temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-30s early next week.

According to the latest information from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the island is expected to see temperatures rise sharply on Monday and Tuesday, with the south of Lanzarote particularly affected.

Yellow heat warning for Monday and Tuesday

AEMET has issued a yellow warning for extreme high temperatures on Monday, September 7, when temperatures could reach around 34°C in affected areas.

The warning continues into Tuesday, September 8, when temperatures are expected to rise further, potentially reaching 36°C.

The latest AEMET forecast for Lanzarote shows Tuesday as the hottest day of the current forecast period, with particularly warm conditions expected across the island.

For those staying in the popular Puerto del Carmen and Tías area, the picture is also notably hot. AEMET’s forecast for Los Pocillos currently gives a maximum of 34°C on Monday and 36°C on Tuesday, with Tuesday described as feeling very hot. (AEMET)

Sunny skies and strong sunshine

The heat will be accompanied by largely clear or sunny skies, particularly during Monday and Tuesday.

With the UV index reaching around 9, anyone spending time outdoors should take extra care during the strongest sunshine. For visitors enjoying Lanzarote’s beaches, swimming pools, excursions and outdoor attractions, it will be important to take regular breaks from the sun, drink plenty of water and avoid spending too long in direct sunlight around the middle of the day.

Sea temperatures are currently around 25°C, meaning the ocean should provide a welcome opportunity to cool down. (AEMET)

Temperatures expected to ease afterwards

The heat is not currently expected to last at the same intensity throughout the week.

Forecasts indicate that temperatures should begin to ease from Wednesday onwards, although it will remain warm and typical of Lanzarote’s September climate.

This means that while Monday and Tuesday look set to be the days requiring the most attention, visitors should still expect plenty of sunshine and warm conditions for much of the week.

Advice for the yellow warning

For residents and tourists in Lanzarote, the usual precautions are particularly important during the hottest part of the day:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Use high-factor sunscreen and reapply regularly.
  • Wear a hat and lightweight clothing.
  • Take regular breaks in the shade or somewhere cool.
  • Take extra care of young children and elderly people.
  • Never leave children or animals inside parked vehicles.

It’s also worth remembering that temperatures can vary considerably around Lanzarote. Coastal areas, inland locations and higher ground can experience noticeably different conditions.

A hot start to the week in Lanzarote

For anyone arriving on the island over the coming days, Monday and Tuesday are currently looking like the days to watch, with temperatures potentially reaching the mid-30s.

The forecast can still change, particularly several days ahead, so visitors and residents should keep checking the latest AEMET Lanzarote weather warnings as the week approaches.

For now, however, the message is clear: Lanzarote is preparing for a very hot couple of days, with Tuesday currently looking like the peak of the heat.

Forecast information is subject to change as weather conditions develop.
