LANZAROTE WAKES UP TO RAIN: HOW LONG WILL THE UNSETTLED WEATHER LAST?

Lanzarote is seeing a change from its familiar sunny conditions as an unsettled weather system brings the possibility of heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms on Friday 9 October.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a yellow weather warning for rain across Lanzarote. The warning is scheduled to begin at 3pm on Friday and remain in force until 6am on Saturday 10 October. During this period, some showers could be intense, with rainfall of up to 15 litres per square metre in one hour and the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm.

HOW LONG IS THE RAIN EXPECTED TO LAST?

The main period of concern for Lanzarote is Friday afternoon and evening, continuing overnight into the early hours of Saturday. The yellow warning is due to end at 6am on Saturday. That does not mean rain will fall continuously throughout those hours, or that every part of the island will experience the same conditions.

Showers can be very localised in Lanzarote: one resort may get a heavy burst of rain while another sees little. AEMET's beach forecast for Matagorda, for example, indicates showers on Friday afternoon and a much brighter outlook for Saturday. Forecasts can change, so check the latest local update before making plans.

A REASSURING MESSAGE FOR HOLIDAYMAKERS

If you are currently enjoying a holiday in Lanzarote, there is no need to assume your break has been spoiled. The warning is for a limited period, focused on Friday afternoon through the night, rather than a forecast of continuous rain for days. Current forecasts suggest conditions should improve on Saturday, particularly in some resort areas.

Lanzarote's weather can vary considerably from one area to another, and a rainy morning or afternoon does not necessarily mean the whole island will be wet. Keep plans flexible, check the forecast before setting off, and consider indoor options if a shower passes over your area. The island's restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions can still offer plenty to do if the weather turns.

SAFETY ADVICE FOR RESIDENTS AND VISITORS

Although the outlook is reassuring in terms of timing, heavy showers can cause localised flooding. Take extra care on wet roads and pavements, allow more time for journeys and never drive or walk through floodwater. Avoid parking near barrancos or in streets known to flood, and follow advice from local authorities and emergency services. If thunderstorms develop, seek shelter in a substantial building and avoid exposed locations.

WHY IS LANZAROTE GETTING RAIN?

The unsettled spell is associated with a DANA weather system affecting the Canary Islands. While Lanzarote is best known for its dry climate, autumn can occasionally bring short, intense bursts of rain. These showers can be welcome after dry weather, but they may cause problems where rainfall collects quickly.

THE LATEST OUTLOOK

In short, the AEMET yellow warning for Lanzarote is scheduled to run from 3pm Friday 9 October until 6am Saturday 10 October. The heaviest showers are expected during the afternoon and evening, with possible isolated thunderstorms. Conditions may improve on Saturday, but visitors and residents should keep checking official forecasts as the situation develops.
