Lanzarote Water Network Under Pressure During August Heatwave

Aguas de Lanzarote has announced temporary changes to its planned water cut-off schedules after the recent Lanzarote heatwave and increased summer water consumption made it difficult for the island’s storage reservoirs to recover between supply cycles.

The water authority says exceptionally high temperatures, combined with the traditional spike in water use during August, have placed additional pressure on Lanzarote’s desalinated water distribution network.

While this does not mean the island is running out of water, it does mean some local storage reservoirs are taking longer than usual to refill after supplying homes, businesses and tourist accommodation.

Why Are Water Cut-Off Times Changing?

Lanzarote’s water supply is managed through a network of major storage reservoirs before being distributed to smaller local reservoirs across the island.

During periods of exceptionally high demand, these secondary reservoirs can struggle to replenish quickly enough before the next distribution cycle begins.

To help balance the system and maintain supplies across as much of the island as possible, Aguas de Lanzarote has introduced temporary adjustments to its scheduled water interruptions. These changes may affect the timing of planned water cut-offs in some areas.

Advice for Residents

Residents are being encouraged to:

  • Use water responsibly, particularly during peak daytime hours.
  • Avoid unnecessary water use where possible.
  • Check for any updated water cut-off schedules affecting their area.
  • Report any significant leaks if they are spotted.

Officials say reducing demand, even slightly, helps reservoirs recover more effectively between supply periods.

What Does This Mean for Tourists?

For visitors enjoying a holiday in Lanzarote, there is currently no indication of widespread disruption to tourism.

Hotels, apartments, restaurants and attractions continue to operate as normal. However, accommodation in areas affected by planned interruptions may experience temporary reductions in water pressure or short periods without supply if scheduled maintenance or balancing measures are required.

Holidaymakers can also help by avoiding unnecessary water use, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

Ongoing Water Challenges in Lanzarote

Lanzarote continues to invest heavily in improving its ageing water infrastructure. Just last week, island authorities extended the official water emergency until February 2027 to allow vital infrastructure projects worth more than €6.4 million to continue under accelerated procedures. These projects include replacing ageing pipelines, reducing leaks and improving the efficiency of the island’s water distribution network.

Authorities Continue to Monitor the Situation

Aguas de Lanzarote says engineers are continuously monitoring reservoir levels and the overall performance of the water network. Further adjustments will be made if required to maintain the best possible service during the current spell of exceptionally hot weather.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about any local changes while continuing to use water responsibly until demand returns to more normal levels.
