Lanzarote Weather Alert: Temperatures Set to Reach 36°C Today as Heat and Calima Continue
Lanzarote is heading into another exceptionally hot day, with temperatures forecast to reach around 36°C and a yellow weather warning in place as the island experiences a spell of intense September heat.
If you are in Lanzarote today, whether you live here or are enjoying a holiday, it is definitely a day to take the heat seriously.
The AEMET yellow warning for high temperatures covers Lanzarote today, with temperatures expected to reach 36°C between 10am and 7.59pm. The warning also applies to neighbouring Fuerteventura.
How hot will Lanzarote be today?
Today’s Lanzarote weather is expected to remain largely clear, but temperatures will climb significantly during the day.
AEMET’s forecast for El Reducto in Arrecife puts today’s maximum temperature at approximately 36°C, with temperatures around 31°C during the morning before rising further during the afternoon. The UV index is also expected to reach 9, classed as very high.
That means the heat won’t simply be something you notice in the middle of the afternoon. Sun exposure can become intense surprisingly quickly, particularly around midday and the early afternoon.
And for anyone who has arrived expecting the usual gentle Lanzarote sunshine, today’s conditions could feel considerably hotter than normal.
A very warm night for Lanzarote
The nights are also remaining unusually warm.
Temperatures across Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are expected to remain around or above 25°C overnight, creating what meteorologists describe as a tropical night.
For holidaymakers without air conditioning, and particularly for older residents or anyone vulnerable to heat, these warm nights can make it much harder for the body to cool down.
Is Lanzarote under a heat alert today?
Yes.
There are two slightly different systems worth explaining.
AEMET has issued a yellow warning for high temperatures in Lanzarote, with the possibility of temperatures reaching 36°C today.
Separately, the Government of the Canary Islands has the wider situation at pre-alert level for maximum temperatures, while the higher alert level for extreme heat is being applied to parts of Gran Canaria.
So, if you’re seeing headlines referring to an orange alert in the Canary Islands, that does not mean Lanzarote is currently under an orange heat warning.
For Lanzarote, the current AEMET warning is yellow.
Calima is also affecting Lanzarote
The heat isn’t the only thing to watch.
The Canary Islands Government continues to list Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and La Graciosa under a pre-alert for calima.
The ongoing episode involves dust particles carried north from Africa, which can reduce visibility and create hazy skies.
That familiar Lanzarote combination of hot temperatures, hazy skies and dusty air could therefore be noticeable today.
For most visitors, calima is simply something they will notice in the appearance of the sky. However, people with respiratory conditions can be more sensitive to elevated concentrations of dust.
The official advice includes keeping doors and windows closed where appropriate, avoiding strenuous exercise and staying hydrated.
What about the wind?
The windy conditions that caused concern yesterday have eased.
The Canary Islands Government ended the wind pre-alert affecting southern and inland areas of Lanzarote on Monday, so there is currently no equivalent Lanzarote wind pre-alert listed in the Government’s active alerts.
Today’s AEMET beach forecast for El Reducto describes winds as light during the morning and moderate during the afternoon, with weak seas.
What should tourists do in Lanzarote today?
There’s no reason to cancel your plans, but today isn’t the day to underestimate the sun.
If you’re spending the day on one of Lanzarote’s beaches, exploring Timanfaya, walking around the island or enjoying outdoor activities, remember that 36°C plus strong UV can become uncomfortable — and potentially dangerous — surprisingly quickly.
A few sensible precautions:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Use high-factor sunscreen and reapply it regularly.
- Wear a hat and lightweight clothing.
- Seek shade during the hottest part of the afternoon.
- Avoid prolonged strenuous exercise around midday.
- Never leave children, elderly people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
- If you are driving, keep water in the car.
- Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours during the hottest part of the day.
The Canary Islands Government specifically recommends staying out of direct sunlight where possible, drinking water frequently and reducing physical activity during the hottest hours.
And there’s a reason to keep an eye on the forecast
The current episode is particularly noticeable because September in Lanzarote is normally associated with warm, dry and dependable weather, but temperatures in this spell are considerably higher than many visitors might expect.
AEMET observations already showed Lanzarote Airport at 26°C shortly after midnight, with a wind gust of 46 km/h at midnight, demonstrating just how warm the island remained overnight.
And today’s forecast is hotter still.
