Lanzarote Weather: Extreme Heat and Calima Set to Bring Two Very Hot Days
Lanzarote is heading into a spell of exceptionally hot weather, with today and tomorrow expected to be the hottest days of the current episode. Residents and holidaymakers across the island are being advised to take extra care as temperatures rise, with a combination of intense sunshine, high temperatures and calima affecting conditions.
A yellow warning for high temperatures is in force for Lanzarote, with the strongest heat expected during the afternoon. Temperatures could reach around 34°C in inland areas today, with some locations potentially exceeding this. The Government of the Canary Islands has warned that maximum temperatures could reach 36°C in Lanzarote during the episode.
Hot and hazy across Lanzarote
Today, Monday 14 September, will be predominantly sunny, although calima and Saharan dust will make the skies hazier than normal, particularly across the eastern and southern parts of the island.
Temperatures will climb rapidly through the day, with inland areas expected to feel considerably hotter than the coastal resorts. Arrecife could see temperatures around the low-to-mid 30s, while sheltered inland locations may become significantly hotter.
For visitors staying in Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and other coastal resorts, the Atlantic breeze may provide some relief, but it is still important not to underestimate the strength of the September sunshine.
Tuesday could be even hotter
The heat is expected to continue into Tuesday 15 September, with another very warm and sunny day forecast.
Some forecasts indicate temperatures could climb into the mid-30s, particularly around inland, southern and eastern areas of Lanzarote. The official warning highlights the possibility of locally reaching 37°C, including around the island’s capital and other exposed areas.
For anyone planning excursions, hiking, cycling or other outdoor activities, the hottest part of the afternoon is likely to be the least comfortable time to be outside.
Calima adds to the discomfort
The heat isn’t the only weather story. Calima is also affecting Lanzarote, with significant concentrations of Saharan dust expected, particularly in lower-lying areas.
The combination of heat and dust could reduce visibility and make the air feel unpleasant, particularly for people who are sensitive to poor air quality or respiratory irritation.
Advice for residents and tourists
Whether you live in Lanzarote or are visiting on holiday, it’s worth taking a few simple precautions over the next couple of days:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the midday and afternoon sun.
- Use high-factor sunscreen and reapply regularly.
- Seek shade or air conditioning during the hottest hours.
- Take extra care with children and older people.
- Don’t leave children or animals in parked vehicles.
- If exercising or sightseeing, consider doing it early in the morning or later in the evening.
- Keep an eye on anyone who may be particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
- During periods of heavy calima, people with respiratory problems should consider limiting strenuous outdoor activity.
A reminder for holidaymakers
For tourists, this is still classic Lanzarote holiday weather — plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures — but these conditions are considerably hotter than the island’s usual comfortable summer days.
If you’re heading to the beach or pool, remember that the breeze can make the temperature feel more comfortable than it actually is. It’s very easy to spend several hours in the sun without realising how much heat you’re absorbing.
Lanzarote remains a fantastic place to be, but over the next two days it’s a good idea to enjoy the sunshine sensibly and stay hydrated.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on the Lanzarote weather forecast, temperatures, calima and any official weather warnings as the week progresses.
