Lanzarote Welcomes 1.74 Million Visitors in the First Half of 2026 – But One Key Tourism Market Continues to Decline
Lanzarote has welcomed more than 1.73 million visitors during the first six months of 2026, keeping tourism numbers broadly in line with last year despite noticeable changes in where visitors are travelling from. The latest figures suggest that while the island remains one of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations, some traditional markets are weakening while others continue to grow.
Overall Visitor Numbers Remain Strong
Between January and June 2026, Lanzarote received 1,739,138 tourists, only slightly below the same period in 2025. Although the total number of visitors has remained remarkably stable, the make-up of those arrivals is changing.
The figures reinforce Lanzarote’s continued popularity as a year-round destination, with the island benefiting from regular flights from across Europe and consistently high demand from international holidaymakers.
The UK Remains Lanzarote’s Largest Tourism Market
From January to June, the island welcomed approximately:
- United Kingdom: 884,720 visitors
- Ireland: 193,157
- Germany: 169,759
- Spain: 136,964
- France: 96,604
- Italy: 55,891
- Nordic countries: 32,131
- Belgium: 31,404
- Netherlands: 43,922
The UK remains by far Lanzarote’s biggest source of visitors, accounting for just over half of all international arrivals. Ireland also continues to perform strongly, while Germany remains an important market despite softer demand.
Nordic Market Shows the Biggest Decline
One of the most notable trends this year is the continued reduction in visitors from the Nordic countries.
The decline reflects wider changes affecting travel demand across Scandinavia, with fewer travellers choosing the Canary Islands compared with previous years. Tourism professionals have been closely monitoring this trend, as Nordic visitors have traditionally been valuable winter tourists for Lanzarote.
Italy Continues to Grow
While some established markets have slowed, Italy has emerged as one of Lanzarote’s fastest-growing tourism markets.
Italian visitor numbers continue to increase, highlighting growing awareness of Lanzarote as a holiday destination beyond its traditional British, Irish and German customer base. This diversification is viewed positively, helping reduce reliance on any single market.
Quality Tourism Remains a Priority
Across the Canary Islands, visitor numbers have remained relatively stable, but spending continues to rise.
Recent tourism data shows that although international arrivals into the Canary Islands have dipped slightly overall compared with last year, visitor spending has continued to increase. This supports the regional strategy of attracting visitors who stay longer and spend more during their holiday rather than simply increasing overall tourist numbers.
What It Means for Lanzarote
For residents and businesses, the latest figures provide reassurance that Lanzarote’s tourism industry remains resilient despite changing travel patterns across Europe.
Hotels, restaurants, excursion companies, car hire firms and local attractions continue to benefit from strong visitor demand, while the growing diversity of international markets could help strengthen the island’s tourism sector in the years ahead.
As the busy summer season continues, tourism professionals will be watching closely to see whether the growth from markets such as Italy can offset further declines from northern Europe.
