Lanzarote Wine Run 2026 Draws International Crowd to La Geria as Champions Retain Their Titles
The spectacular volcanic vineyards of La Geria once again provided the backdrop for one of Lanzarote’s most distinctive sporting events as the Lanzarote Wine Run 2026 welcomed thousands of participants, spectators and wine lovers from around the world. The annual event successfully combined sport, local culture, gastronomy and sustainability in a celebration unique to the island.
In the event’s flagship 23-kilometre race, local athletes Yerove Rodríguez and Aroa Merino successfully defended their titles, confirming their dominance on one of the Canary Islands’ most challenging and scenic race routes. The course took runners through the volcanic landscape of La Geria, an agricultural area internationally recognised for its innovative vineyard cultivation methods.
More than 1,900 runners representing over 30 nationalities took part in the weekend event, highlighting the growing international appeal of Lanzarote as a destination for sports tourism and outdoor experiences. Participants could choose between the demanding 23km race, a shorter 12km route, or a trekking option designed for those wanting to enjoy the landscape at a more relaxed pace.
A Celebration of Sport, Wine and Lanzarote Culture
While the races are the main attraction, the Wine Run has evolved into much more than a sporting competition. Throughout the weekend, visitors enjoyed live music, local food, wine tastings and family-friendly activities centred around the village of Uga and the surrounding wine-growing region.
The accompanying Wine Festival showcased wines from Lanzarote’s Denomination of Origin wineries, giving residents and tourists the opportunity to discover the unique flavours produced from vines grown in volcanic soil. Local producers, winemakers and restaurateurs were also on hand to highlight the island’s culinary traditions and agricultural heritage.
Family Activities and Inclusive Participation
The event began with the popular Wine Run Kids, which attracted around 250 young participants and encouraged healthy lifestyles among the island’s younger generation. Families gathered in Uga to support the children and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Organisers also continued their commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Special equipment and volunteer support enabled people with reduced mobility and visual impairments to participate in the event, ensuring the Wine Run remains open to as many people as possible.
Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Lanzarote
One of the key aims of the Wine Run is to promote awareness of La Geria, one of the world’s most unusual wine-growing regions. The event supports initiatives focused on preserving the landscape while encouraging visitors to appreciate Lanzarote’s natural and cultural heritage.
As Lanzarote continues to attract travellers seeking authentic experiences beyond traditional beach tourism, events such as the Wine Run demonstrate how sport, sustainability and local culture can work together to create memorable experiences for both residents and visitors.
