Major €3 Million Upgrade Planned for Tías Underpass on Lanzarote

A long-awaited improvement to one of Tías’ important road connections has taken another step forward, with the Canary Islands Government approving a €2.96 million project to upgrade the underpass beneath the LZ-2.

The project concerns the Camino de Los Fajardo underpass in Tías, which provides an important connection between the main town of Tías and the Los Lirios area.

The Canary Islands Government has now given the construction project its definitive approval, with a base tender budget of €2,958,673.83, including IGIC. The approval means the necessary administrative process can now continue towards putting the project out to tender and eventually beginning construction.

A safer and more accessible route through Tías

For people who regularly use this route, the biggest change will be the redesign of the section passing underneath the LZ-2, one of Lanzarote’s principal roads.

The upgraded underpass will have a two-way road with two 3.5-metre-wide lanes, together with 0.5-metre shoulders on either side.

Perhaps more importantly for pedestrians, the project includes a separate pavement approximately three metres wide. The pedestrian area will be physically separated from vehicles with a kerb and safety railing.

That represents a significant improvement on the existing arrangement, particularly for people walking between Tías and the surrounding residential areas.

The need for better pedestrian facilities at the underpass has been raised previously by Tías Town Council. In 2025, the council highlighted concerns about the existing pedestrian provision, including a section with a pavement of only around one metre wide.

What will actually happen?

The work will involve constructing a new structural frame for the underpass, together with new entrance and exit structures on one side. Some of the existing structures on the other side will be retained.

It is a substantial engineering project rather than simply widening the road surface.

One of the interesting aspects of the scheme is how the work will be carried out while keeping the busy LZ-2 operating.

The construction is planned in stages. Initially, work on a micropile screen in the central reservation will mean traffic on the LZ-2 is reduced to one lane in each direction.

Traffic will then be moved onto one side of the road while demolition, excavation and construction work takes place on the other. Once that section is completed, the traffic arrangement will be changed so the remaining side can be tackled.

In other words, drivers should not expect the LZ-2 to be completely closed for the project. However, temporary lane restrictions and changes to traffic arrangements can be expected once construction gets underway.

When will construction begin?

At this stage, there is no confirmed construction start date.

The latest announcement is approval of the project, allowing the administrative process to move towards tendering and construction. It does not mean that work starts immediately.

For residents of Tías, Los Lirios and the surrounding areas, as well as visitors using the LZ-2 to travel around Lanzarote, the eventual works will therefore be something to keep an eye on for possible temporary traffic changes.

A useful improvement for residents and visitors

Although an underpass might not sound like the most exciting infrastructure project on Lanzarote, this particular improvement could make a noticeable difference to everyday movement around Tías.

The Camino de Los Fajardo provides a connection beneath the LZ-2, and improving both the road layout and pedestrian facilities should make the route more practical and safer for drivers, walkers and other road users.

For tourists staying in and around Tías, Puerto del Carmen and Los Lirios, it is also a useful reminder that Lanzarote’s infrastructure continues to evolve alongside the island’s growing population and visitor numbers.

The €2.96 million Tías underpass project is ultimately aimed at improving safety, accessibility, capacity and connectivity at this particular crossing of the LZ-2.
