Man Arrested in Arrecife After Police Recover Modified Revolver Linked to 2017 Lanzarote Theft

A man has been arrested in Arrecife after police recovered a modified Astra .22 LR revolver linked to a 2017 burglary in San Bartolomé.

Police in Lanzarote have arrested a man in Arrecife following an investigation into a revolver that had allegedly been altered in an attempt to make it usable again.

The incident is one of the latest pieces of Lanzarote news involving the Policía Nacional, and although it took place in Arrecife, the investigation also led officers back to a property theft in San Bartolomé dating from 2017.

Investigation began in June

According to information released by the Policía Nacional and reported by several Lanzarote news outlets, the investigation began on 18 June 2026.

Officers from the Local Judicial Police Brigade in Arrecife had received information that someone was allegedly attempting to modify firearms. Investigators then carried out enquiries to identify the person involved and locate the weapon.

The investigation eventually led officers to a man in Arrecife who was carrying an Astra revolver chambered in .22 LR. Police say he was attempting to have further work carried out on the weapon by a specialist.

Attempt to flee from police

When the man became aware of the police presence, officers say he attempted to escape.

During the incident, the revolver was thrown into a neighbouring property. Police were able to locate and recover it.

The weapon was then examined by the Forensic Ballistics Laboratory of the National Police headquarters in the Canary Islands.

Police say the revolver had previously been rendered unusable, but investigators found structural alterations to the barrel which they say were intended to restore its ability to be used. Further components were reportedly still required before it could become fully functional.

Revolver linked to 2017 burglary in San Bartolomé

One of the more notable details of the investigation is the history of the weapon.

Police say their enquiries established that the Astra revolver had originally been stolen during a forced-entry burglary at a home in the municipality of San Bartolomé in 2017.

The weapon was therefore not simply an unrelated firearm discovered during the investigation. Its history was traced back to a theft on Lanzarote almost a decade earlier.

Second police operation in Arrecife

Following the recovery and forensic examination of the revolver, investigators continued looking for the suspect.

On 21 September 2026, police located him inside a parked van in Arrecife. According to the police account, the van was being used as a dwelling and the man had barricaded himself inside with a dog described by authorities as potentially dangerous.

Because of the circumstances, judicial authorisation was required before officers could enter the vehicle.

The man was eventually detained.

Local Police and animal services involved

The operation also involved officers from the Policía Local de Arrecife and staff from the municipal animal health service.

The animal services team took responsibility for the dog after the operation.

Following the completion of police proceedings, the arrested man was placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority.

Arrecife is Lanzarote's capital and a busy residential and commercial centre, so police operations can occasionally attract attention from people living nearby or passing through the city.

As with any criminal investigation, it is also important to remember that an arrest and allegations do not amount to a criminal conviction. The judicial process will determine any further responsibility.

This case also demonstrates how an investigation into an apparently recent incident can uncover links to an older crime. In this instance, police say the revolver recovered in Arrecife had been stolen from a San Bartolomé property in 2017.
