Man Arrested Over €50,000 Fake Holiday Rental Scam Linked to the Canary Islands

A man has been arrested by Spain’s National Police following an investigation into an alleged online fraud scheme that is believed to have swindled victims out of more than €50,000 through fake holiday rental advertisements across the Canary Islands, including properties advertised in Lanzarote.

According to police, the suspect is linked to 65 alleged fraud offences committed over a period of more than a year. Investigators say the scam involved publishing convincing rental listings on popular online platforms, attracting people searching for holiday accommodation or long-term rentals.

Victims were allegedly persuaded to transfer deposits or advance payments to secure the advertised properties. However, after the money had been sent, communication with the supposed landlord would stop, and the accommodation either did not exist or had no connection to the person advertising it.

The investigation suggests that fraudulent adverts were placed for properties on several Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, with the total losses exceeding €50,000. Police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.

Holidaymakers Urged to Stay Vigilant

The case serves as a reminder for anyone booking accommodation online to take extra precautions before making payments. Travellers are advised to:

  • Book through reputable platforms with secure payment systems.
  • Be cautious of deals that appear significantly cheaper than similar properties.
  • Avoid making direct bank transfers unless the legitimacy of the property has been verified.
  • Check reviews, property ownership details and, where possible, speak directly with the accommodation provider before sending any money.

Investigation Continues

The National Police investigation remains ongoing, and officers are continuing to examine whether further offences are connected to the suspect. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of identifying additional victims or uncovering more fraudulent listings linked to the case.

Anyone who believes they may have been affected by a similar scam is encouraged to report the matter to the police and provide any relevant correspondence or payment records.
