New Beach Sports Area Coming to Playa Blanca as €1.3 Million Project Takes Shape
Playa Blanca is set to gain a major new sports and leisure facility, with a 2,500-square-metre beach sports area now being built close to Las Coloradas.
The development is part of the expansion of the San Marcial del Rubicón Sports Centre and is designed to give both local residents and visitors more opportunities to enjoy outdoor sport in the south of Lanzarote.
The project, being carried out by Yaiza Town Hall, represents an investment of €1.3 million and will create a dedicated space for several popular beach sports.
Beach volleyball, football and handball
The new facility will include specially designed soft-surface courts suitable for:
- Beach volleyball
- Beach football
- Beach handball
Rather than simply providing additional sports pitches, the project is being developed as an accessible recreational area intended to combine sport, exercise and social activities.
The new site is located next to the existing San Marcial del Rubicón sports centre, in the vicinity of Las Coloradas in Playa Blanca.
For residents of Playa Blanca, the development will provide another place to exercise and take part in organised or informal sporting activities. For visitors staying in the resort, it could eventually offer another option for staying active while on holiday in Lanzarote.
More than just sports courts
The plans go beyond the beach sports pitches themselves.
The new area is also expected to feature changing rooms, an exercise area, shaded spaces, a kiosk and terrace, together with perimeter fencing and lighting.
Lighting is also planned for the new beach sports area and the first phase of the San Marcial del Rubicón sports centre that has already been completed.
That could make the facility particularly useful during the hotter parts of the year, when exercising in the cooler parts of the day or into the evening is often more comfortable.
A joint investment by Yaiza and Lanzarote
The €1.3 million project is being funded jointly by Yaiza Town Hall and the Cabildo de Lanzarote through the 2026 Municipal Cooperation Plan.
The Cabildo is contributing €757,000, while Yaiza Town Hall is investing €543,000.
The project is being presented by the municipality as part of a wider effort to improve sporting facilities and create more spaces for recreation, exercise and family activities in Yaiza.
Another sports investment planned for Playa Blanca
The beach sports development isn’t the only investment in sporting facilities currently being pursued in Playa Blanca.
Yaiza has also put forward improvements to the Playa Blanca football ground, with an estimated budget of €2.2 million.
That project includes new stands, changing rooms, a cafeteria, additional facilities and lighting.
Together, the developments point towards a continued expansion of sports and leisure facilities in Playa Blanca, alongside the resort’s more traditional attractions of beaches, restaurants, shops and water-based activities.
When will the new Playa Blanca sports area open?
At present, the beach sports facility is under construction, but an official opening date has not been announced.
Once completed, the new 2,500-square-metre area could become an interesting addition to Playa Blanca’s sporting offer, particularly for young people, local sports groups and families looking for more ways to stay active.
