New Multi-Language Sea Safety Campaign Launched Across Lanzarote and La Graciosa to Help Prevent Drownings

A major new sea safety campaign in Lanzarote has been launched to help reduce drowning incidents by providing vital safety advice to both residents and the millions of tourists who visit the island each year.

The initiative, organised by the Lanzarote and La Graciosa Security and Emergency Consortium, aims to raise awareness of the risks along the islands’ coastline through easy-to-understand videos and information available in five languages.

With Lanzarote’s beaches attracting visitors from across Europe throughout the year, officials hope the campaign will encourage safer decisions before entering the sea and ultimately save lives.

Safety Advice Available in Five Languages

Recognising the international nature of tourism in the Canary Islands, the campaign has been produced in:

  • Spanish
  • English
  • German
  • French
  • Italian

In total, 30 short educational videos have been created, alongside multilingual posters that will be displayed in tourist accommodation, sports facilities, schools and public buildings across Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The videos are also being shared online and can be accessed using QR codes displayed on campaign material.

Key Water Safety Messages

Rather than focusing on a single issue, the campaign highlights several situations where accidents commonly occur.

Among the advice being promoted is:

  • Always check the beach warning flags before entering the water.
  • Follow instructions given by lifeguards.
  • Never assume calm-looking seas are safe.
  • Be extremely cautious when using inflatable toys or rubber rings, particularly on windy days.
  • Keep children under constant supervision in both the sea and swimming pools.
  • Take extra care at beaches and rocky swimming areas where there are no lifeguards.
  • Boat and jet ski users should respect speed limits and maintain safe distances from swimmers.

One important message reminds parents that inflatables can quickly be carried offshore by the wind, even when conditions appear calm.

Lanzarote’s Coastline Can Change Quickly

Lanzarote is renowned for its spectacular beaches and volcanic coastline, but conditions can change in a matter of minutes.

Powerful Atlantic swells, rip currents and sudden gusts of wind can create dangerous situations, particularly for visitors unfamiliar with local conditions.

Emergency services stress that prevention remains the most effective way to avoid tragedies, encouraging everyone to take a few moments to assess conditions before entering the water.

A Campaign Aimed at Both Tourists and Residents

The awareness initiative has been developed as part of the “The Sea Unites Us – Give It Life” programme and is designed to reach both local communities and international visitors throughout the year.

By using multiple languages and digital resources, organisers hope essential safety information is accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of where they are from.

Officials have also confirmed the campaign will be promoted through tourism organisations, public authorities, social media channels and local television to maximise its reach.

With millions of visitors enjoying Lanzarote’s coastline every year, officials hope this latest campaign will help reduce avoidable accidents and ensure everyone can enjoy the island’s beaches safely.
