New Roundabout Planned to Improve Traffic at Busy Arrecife Junction

Drivers travelling through one of Arrecife’s busiest commercial areas could soon notice smoother journeys after the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved plans for a new four-exit roundabout designed to tackle congestion near the IKEA junction.

The project focuses on a well-known traffic hotspot where Carretera de Los Mármoles meets Carretera de Los Castillos, an important route linking the island’s main commercial and industrial areas with Puerto Naos, Castillo de San José, and the centre of Arrecife. The junction is used daily by commuters, delivery vehicles, buses, and tourists heading towards the capital or Costa Teguise.

Why Is a New Roundabout Needed?

Anyone who regularly drives through eastern Arrecife will be familiar with the long queues that develop during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Traffic heading towards the main Costa Teguise roundabout frequently backs up, often making it difficult for vehicles trying to turn towards the port or industrial estate. Larger vehicles, including HGVs, coaches and commercial vans, also use this route, adding to delays during busy periods.

The new roundabout is expected to:

  • Improve traffic flow through the junction.
  • Reduce congestion during peak travel times.
  • Make turning movements safer and more predictable.
  • Improve access to Arrecife’s industrial estates and commercial businesses.
  • Help heavy goods vehicles and buses move more efficiently through the area.

Project Already Designed

According to the Cabildo, the engineering plans have already been completed following a request from Arrecife Town Hall. The project is now expected to move into the public tender process before construction begins.

Officials have indicated that the work is likely to be carried out in phases to minimise disruption for motorists while improvements are completed.

What It Means for Residents and Tourists

Although the junction is mainly used by local commuters, many visitors also drive through this area when travelling between:

  • Arrecife
  • Costa Teguise
  • Puerto de Los Mármoles
  • IKEA Lanzarote
  • The surrounding industrial and shopping areas

Once completed, the new layout should help reduce waiting times and make journeys into and out of the capital more straightforward, particularly during busy holiday periods when traffic volumes increase.

Motorists should expect some temporary disruption once construction starts, but the long-term aim is to create a safer and more efficient road layout for everyone using this important gateway into Arrecife.

Looking Ahead

Improving mobility around Arrecife remains a priority for local authorities as both the resident population and visitor numbers continue to grow. The planned roundabout forms part of wider efforts to modernise Lanzarote’s road infrastructure, improve road safety, and reduce congestion at key transport links across the island.
