OFFSHORE EARTHQUAKES RECORDED WEST OF LANZAROTE: WHAT VISITORS AND RESIDENTS NEED TO KNOW

A pair of offshore earthquakes were recorded in the Atlantic near the Canary Islands on Sunday, 25 October 2026, including a magnitude 3.1 tremor listed by Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN).

The stronger earthquake occurred at 18:08 local time, with its epicentre recorded at approximately 29.05° north and 14.90° west, at a depth of around 50 kilometres. An earlier magnitude 2.6 earthquake was registered at 04:36, at a depth of approximately 31 kilometres. Both events were recorded offshore in the broad area identified by the IGN as “Atlántico-Canarias”, to the west and southwest of Lanzarote.

WHAT HAS BEEN REPORTED?

The events took place out at sea rather than directly beside Lanzarote’s coastline.

Earthquakes are monitored across the Canary Islands by the IGN, which publishes information on recent seismic activity. Its earthquake catalogue can be updated as readings are reviewed, so the official record is the best place to check for revised details.

SHOULD TOURISTS BE WORRIED?

Based on the information available at the time of writing, there was no reported disruption linked to these offshore tremors. A magnitude 3.1 earthquake is relatively small, and the reported depth and offshore location help explain why it may not be noticeably felt on the island. However, earthquake magnitude alone cannot determine the effects of every event, and no single tremor should be used to make predictions about future activity.

Lanzarote is part of a volcanic archipelago, and scientific agencies routinely monitor seismic activity in and around the Canary Islands.

WHERE CAN YOU CHECK OFFICIAL UPDATES?

Residents and visitors can consult the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) website for its latest earthquake listings and verified event details. If official authorities issue safety advice or an alert, follow that guidance and updates from local emergency services.

For anyone currently enjoying a holiday in Lanzarote, the available reports indicate that these two offshore earthquakes did not result in any reported significant impact. We will continue to rely on official information for any further updates.
