Passengers Miss Lanzarote to Edinburgh Flight Amid E-Gate Disruptions

Travellers departing from Lanzarote Airport this week faced unexpected delays that led to several passengers missing a scheduled Ryanair flight to Edinburgh. The disruption, which occurred yesterday, has been linked to technical problems with the airport’s electronic passport control (e-gate) system, it was resolved the same day.

Passengers reported long queues forming at security and passport control as the automated e-gates, designed to speed up border checks, were malfunctioning. With fewer manual checkpoints available to handle the increased demand, waiting times grew rapidly, catching many travellers off guard. As a result, a number of passengers arrived at their boarding gates too late and were denied boarding, despite having arrived at the airport within the recommended timeframe.

Airport authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the malfunction, but similar incidents in other European airports have previously been attributed to software glitches, connectivity issues, or system overload during peak travel periods.

Growing Concerns

For Lanzarote, a place where tourism plays such a vital role in the island’s economy, incidents like this are particularly concerning. Although issues of this nature are happening worldwide, when travellers experience disruptions of this scale, it can leave a lasting negative impression and may even put some people off visiting altogether.  It’s completely understandable that passengers feel frustrated and concerned. Whilst the issue yesterday was solved, we know there are other ongoing issues that are being addressed and we hope they can quickly ensure visitors to Lanzarote can return to their worry free holidays.

What Travellers Can Do

While such disruptions are often outside passengers’ control, there are practical steps travellers can take to reduce the risk of missing a flight:

Arrive earlier than recommended

During busy travel seasons arriving at least three hours before departure can prepare you for unexpected delays.

Monitor airport updates

Keep an eye on airport announcements, flight apps, and airline notifications for real-time updates on delays or gate changes.

Travel with digital and printed documents

Having boarding passes and travel documents easily accessible can help you move more quickly through checkpoints.

Speak to staff if delays escalate

If you believe you may miss your flight due to airport delays, notify airline or airport staff as soon as possible. While not guaranteed, they may be able to assist or advise on next steps.

Reassurance for Future Travel

While incidents like this can be frustrating, they remain relatively rare. Reading comments from recent travellers to and from Lanzarote across social media, the huge majority are commenting that they had smooth airport experiences. Most airport e-gate systems operate efficiently, and airports continuously work to improve reliability and response times when issues arise.

For now, passengers flying through Lanzarote are advised to allow extra time and stay alert to changing conditions at the airport. With a bit of preparation and awareness, travellers can significantly reduce the likelihood of similar disruptions impacting their journey.
