Puerto del Carmen Records Lanzarote’s Highest Temperature as Heatwave Pushes Island Close to 40°C

Puerto del Carmen has recorded Lanzarote’s highest temperature during the latest heatwave, with the mercury climbing to 39.9°C, making it one of the hottest locations on the island as extreme weather conditions gripped the Canary Islands. Recent meteorological reports indicate the intense heat affected much of Lanzarote, with inland and sheltered areas experiencing significantly higher temperatures than coastal locations.

The near-40°C reading highlights just how intense this latest spell of hot weather has been. While Lanzarote is well known for its year-round sunshine, temperatures approaching 40°C remain relatively uncommon and can create challenging conditions for both residents and the thousands of tourists currently enjoying the island.

Why Was Puerto del Carmen So Hot?

Although Lanzarote usually benefits from cooling Atlantic breezes, weather patterns associated with the current heatwave reduced those cooling winds and allowed temperatures to climb rapidly throughout the day.

Areas sheltered from stronger coastal winds, including parts of Puerto del Carmen, often experience higher afternoon temperatures when hot air becomes trapped. Combined with clear skies and strong August sunshine, conditions became particularly uncomfortable during the hottest part of the day.

Heatwave Safety Advice for Visitors and Residents

If you’re currently in Lanzarote, it’s worth taking a few extra precautions during periods of extreme heat:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure between midday and late afternoon.
  • Wear lightweight clothing, sunglasses and a high-factor sunscreen.
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
  • If you’re planning hikes or outdoor activities, start early in the morning or wait until the evening when temperatures begin to fall.

Those with existing medical conditions, young children and older adults should take extra care, as prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures increases the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Busy Beaches Offer Some Relief

Despite the exceptional temperatures, Lanzarote’s beaches remained popular, with many visitors cooling off in the Atlantic or relaxing under parasols. Coastal areas generally felt slightly more comfortable thanks to sea breezes, although the UV index remained extremely high throughout the day.

Will the Heat Continue?

Weather conditions in the Canary Islands can change quickly, but forecasters often expect temperatures to ease once the hottest air mass moves away and the usual Atlantic trade winds strengthen again. Visitors are encouraged to keep an eye on official weather forecasts, especially if planning excursions or outdoor activities during the coming days.
