Red Flag Remains at Arrecife’s El Reducto Beach Following Confirmed Water Contamination

Anyone planning a visit to El Reducto Beach in Arrecife should be aware that the red flag remains in place, with swimming currently prohibited after health authorities confirmed bacterial contamination linked to wastewater entering the sea.

The precautionary measure affects one of Lanzarote’s most popular urban beaches, used by both residents and tourists throughout the year. Local authorities are urging everyone to respect the warning flags and avoid entering the water until further testing confirms that it is safe to reopen.

Why Has El Reducto Beach Been Closed?

The issue first came to light after lifeguards and local authorities identified what appeared to be wastewater entering the sea near Punta del Camello, located at the western end of El Reducto Beach.

Following laboratory analysis by the Canary Islands Health Department, elevated levels of bacterial contamination were confirmed. As a result, Arrecife Town Hall has kept the red flag flying and continues to enforce its no-swimming protocol.

Municipal officials believe the contamination may be connected to a recent failure in part of the island’s sewage pumping network in Argana Alta, although investigations are continuing to establish the exact cause. The Water Consortium has been asked to inspect nearby pumping stations and the surrounding infrastructure.

What Does This Mean for Visitors?

If you’re holidaying in Lanzarote, there’s no need to cancel your beach plans altogether.

The restriction currently applies to El Reducto Beach in Arrecife, and visitors should simply follow the advice displayed on-site. Entering the water while a red flag is flying is not recommended, as the closure is in place to protect public health.

Fortunately, Lanzarote has plenty of other beautiful beaches where conditions remain suitable for swimming, although it’s always sensible to check local flag warnings before entering the sea.

When Will the Beach Reopen?

There is currently no confirmed reopening date.

Health officials will continue taking water samples over the coming days. Once the water quality meets the required health standards, the red flag can be removed and normal bathing resumed. Until then, authorities are asking everyone to remain patient and follow the safety advice.

Advice for Residents and Tourists

If you’re staying in or visiting Arrecife:

  • Do not enter the water at El Reducto while the red flag remains in place.
  • Follow instructions from lifeguards and local authorities.
  • Check for official updates before planning a swim.
  • Consider visiting one of Lanzarote’s many alternative beaches while the situation is resolved.

Authorities have stressed that these temporary restrictions are designed to protect public health while investigations and further water quality testing continue.
