Rental Car Reported as Missing Found in Arrecife

A car belonging to a rental company has been recovered by the Policía Local de Arrecife after being found parked in La Vega, Arrecife. The vehicle had been reported after it was not returned at the end of its agreed rental period.
A routine police check in Arrecife, Lanzarote, has led to the recovery of a rental car that had been reported to police following its failure to be returned to the rental company.
The Citroën C4 was located on a public road in the La Vega neighbourhood of Arrecife during the night of Saturday, September 5. Officers subsequently confirmed that the vehicle was listed in police databases in connection with a report of apropiación indebida, or unlawful appropriation.

Rental car was found without apparent damage

According to information released following the police intervention, the vehicle did not appear to have suffered any obvious damage when it was located.
However, officers discovered that the sticker or identifying badge showing that the vehicle belonged to a car rental company in Lanzarote had been removed.
The discovery was made with the cooperation of the company that owned the vehicle. Once police had confirmed the vehicle's status and registration details, the company was informed of the necessary procedure for taking possession of the car.

The company's manager subsequently attended Policía Nacional premises in Arrecife together with Policía Local officers so that the relevant information could be formally passed on to the appropriate authorities and the courts.

Not simply a late rental return

The case highlights an important distinction for anyone renting a car in Lanzarote.
A vehicle remaining in a renter's possession beyond the agreed rental period can become a much more serious matter if it is not returned and the rental company makes a formal complaint.
Spanish law provides for the offence of apropiación indebida where property that has been entrusted to someone with an obligation to return it is appropriated or not returned in circumstances covered by the law.
That means a situation which may initially appear to be nothing more than an overdue Lanzarote car rental can potentially develop into a criminal matter.

Several rental cars recovered in Lanzarote this summer

The Arrecife police operation is also not being described as an isolated incident.
The Policía Local de Arrecife says officers have recovered several vehicles during the summer, particularly cars belonging to rent-a-car companies, after they had not been returned and the companies subsequently reported them.
For an island such as Lanzarote, where rental cars are widely used by visitors to explore destinations including Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise and the island's rural areas, the cases also underline the importance of following the conditions of a vehicle rental agreement.

A reminder for visitors hiring a car in Lanzarote

For tourists planning to rent a car in Lanzarote, the message is straightforward: check the return date and time on your rental agreement and make sure the vehicle is returned as agreed.
If travel plans change, contacting the rental company before the agreed return time is far safer than simply keeping the vehicle.
Visitors should also keep their rental documentation and any communication with the Lanzarote car hire company until the vehicle has been formally returned.
For residents who use rental vehicles temporarily, the same rules apply.
