Seprona Reports Buggy Excursion in Protected Area of Lanzarote

An organised buggy excursion through a protected area of Lanzarote has led to enforcement action after environmental authorities alleged the group left authorised tracks and drove through a sensitive natural area.

According to information released by local authorities, the incident took place in the Barranco de Las Piletas, near Guatiza, where six buggies were reportedly travelling together outside the island’s authorised road and track network. The case was initially reported by Seprona, the Nature Protection Service of Spain’s Civil Guard, and has resulted in the Environment Department of the Cabildo of Lanzarote opening sanction proceedings.

What Happened?

Officials say the excursion took place on 14 January 2026, when officers observed an organised buggy tour leaving the established route and entering land protected for its landscape and environmental value. Authorities allege the group crossed unauthorised terrain rather than remaining on designated roads and tracks.

The Cabildo says this type of activity breaches environmental regulations designed to protect Lanzarote’s unique volcanic landscape and fragile ecosystems.

Why It Matters

Lanzarote is recognised internationally for its extraordinary volcanic scenery and protected natural habitats. Large areas of the island fall under strict environmental protection, with rules intended to balance tourism, recreation and conservation.

Environmental experts involved in the case have warned that repeated off-road vehicle activity can damage delicate habitats, increase erosion and disturb wildlife. The affected area is home to several protected bird species, including birds of prey that rely on these quiet landscapes for nesting and breeding.

A Reminder for Visitors and Tour Operators

Adventure excursions remain one of Lanzarote’s most popular tourist activities, with many reputable companies operating fully authorised buggy and off-road tours across the island. These businesses follow approved routes and work within local environmental regulations.

Authorities stress that anyone taking part in buggy, quad or 4x4 excursions should ensure their chosen operator follows official routes and respects protected areas. Staying on authorised tracks helps preserve the landscapes that attract visitors from around the world while ensuring tourism remains sustainable.

Protecting Lanzarote’s Natural Beauty

The Cabildo has reiterated its commitment to protecting Lanzarote’s unique environment and says it will continue taking action against activities that threaten protected natural spaces.

For both residents and visitors, the message is clear: enjoying Lanzarote’s spectacular scenery comes with a responsibility to respect the island’s conservation laws. By following designated routes and supporting responsible tourism operators, everyone can help preserve Lanzarote’s natural heritage for future generations.
