Strong Winds Sweep Across Lanzarote as Gusts Reach 85 km/h

Residents and visitors across Lanzarote experienced a particularly windy start to the week, with powerful gusts reported in several parts of the island. According to local weather observations, the strongest gusts reached up to 85 km/h on Monday, making it one of the windiest days of the summer so far.

The strongest winds were driven by the island’s familiar northeast trade winds, which became significantly stronger throughout the day. While Lanzarote is well known for its breezy climate, gusts of this strength can create difficult conditions, particularly along exposed coastlines, open roads and elevated areas.

For most people, the weather has meant everything from sand being blown across beaches to stronger waves along parts of the coast. Motorists, especially those driving larger vehicles such as campervans, motorhomes and vans, should take extra care when travelling on exposed roads where sudden gusts can affect handling.

Visitors planning outdoor activities may also notice the stronger winds, particularly during the afternoon and evening. Beachgoers should be aware that umbrellas and lightweight equipment can easily become airborne, while hikers and cyclists may find conditions more challenging than usual.

Despite the windy conditions, temperatures have remained warm and the wind often helps make the heat feel more comfortable during the warmer months.

Weather services have previously issued yellow-level wind warnings when gusts of around 70 km/h or more are expected, with the strongest winds typically affecting southern and exposed parts of Lanzarote.

Practical Advice

If you’re on the island today:

  • Secure loose outdoor furniture, parasols and other lightweight items.
  • Drive carefully, particularly if you’re in a high-sided vehicle.
  • Take extra care near cliffs and coastal viewpoints where gusts can be unexpectedly strong.
  • If heading to the beach, keep an eye on flags and sea conditions before entering the water.

As always, conditions can vary across Lanzarote, so it’s worth checking the latest local forecasts if you’re planning a day outdoors.
