Supreme Court Upholds Prison Sentence in Arrecife Attack on Elderly Woman

A prison sentence of nine years and three months has been upheld by Spain’s Supreme Court in a case involving a violent attack on an elderly woman in Arrecife, Lanzarote. The ruling brings a further legal challenge to an end after the defence’s appeal was rejected. The case relates to an incident on 8 January 2020. According to reporting by Spanish news agencies, the man entered the woman’s home in the island capital during the afternoon, when she was asleep. The court-established account says he struck her on the head with a hammer, took a purse containing €1,600 and left her locked in a bathroom before fleeing. The woman suffered serious injuries, including a head injury with bleeding and fractures to her jaw and left arm. Because her condition was considered life-threatening, she was transferred to Doctor Negrín Hospital in Gran Canaria. Reports state that her recovery took around 70 days.

How the sentence was decided

The Provincial Court of Las Palmas imposed a total prison term of nine years and three months: four years and three months for attempted homicide and five years for robbery with violence. It also ordered compensation relating to the stolen money, the consequences of the injuries and the time needed to recover. The defence challenged the conviction, raising arguments that included the lack of DNA evidence on the hammer and concerns about how testimony had been assessed. The High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands rejected the appeal earlier in 2026. The case was then taken to the Supreme Court, which has now found no significant error or procedural irregularity that would justify overturning the lower court’s decision. The Supreme Court’s decision was reported on 26 October 2026. The ruling also calls for appropriate steps to be taken to determine whether two witnesses may have given false testimony during the proceedings; that question is separate from the decision to uphold the conviction.

A serious case for Arrecife

The incident happened several years ago, but the latest ruling has brought renewed attention to the case in Lanzarote. The report concerns an attack in a private home in Arrecife and does not, by itself, indicate a general threat to visitors or residents across Lanzarote. For anyone following Lanzarote news, the decision is a reminder that serious criminal cases can take years to move through appeals. The Supreme Court’s role is to examine whether the law and legal procedure have been applied correctly, rather than simply rehear every part of a case from the beginning.
