The Other Side of Lanzarote: 7 Places Tourists Often Miss

It is easy to spend a week in Lanzarote enjoying the pool, beach, restaurants and bars around your resort. But venture a little further and you will discover whitewashed villages, dramatic volcanic scenery, unusual gardens and viewpoints that feel a world away from the busy holiday strips. Here are seven places to add to your list.

1. HARÍA: THE VALLEY OF A THOUSAND PALMS

In the north of the island, Haría feels different from the drier volcanic landscapes many visitors picture. Its palm-filled valley and traditional village streets make it lovely for a slower wander. Browse local craft shops, stop for a coffee and enjoy the scenery. The area is also associated with César Manrique, whose former home is now a museum.

2. EL GOLFO AND THE GREEN LAGOON

El Golfo is known for the striking green lagoon at Charco de los Clicos, set against dark volcanic sand and rugged cliffs. It is a fantastic place for photographs, especially in softer light later in the day. Swimming in the lagoon and nearby protected area is prohibited; follow marked paths and local signs.

3. LOS HERVIDEROS: WHERE THE OCEAN MEETS THE LAVA

At Los Hervideros, waves push into cavities and channels in the volcanic rock, creating a dramatic display when the sea is active. Use designated paths and stay behind safety barriers. Enjoy the spectacle from safe viewpoints rather than getting too close to the water.

4. VILLA DE TEGUISE: HISTORY BEYOND THE RESORTS

Historic Teguise has white buildings, traditional architecture and quiet streets to explore. It was once Lanzarote’s capital and offers a glimpse of the island’s history. Allow time to wander and check locally for market days and opening times.

5. LA GERIA: VINES GROWING IN VOLCANIC ASH

Lanzarote’s wine-growing area is unlike most vineyards. Vines grow in hollows dug into volcanic ash and are often protected by curved stone walls that shield them from the wind. Some wineries offer visits or tastings. Check opening times and arrange transport responsibly if you plan to taste wine.

6. JARDÍN DE CACTUS: A GARDEN WITH A DIFFERENCE

Designed by César Manrique, the Cactus Garden in Guatiza brings together thousands of cacti and other plants in a striking volcanic setting. Check official visitor information for current opening times and ticket details.

7. MIRADOR DEL RÍO: VIEWS ACROSS TO LA GRACIOSA

On Lanzarote’s northern cliffs, Mirador del Río offers sweeping views across the sea towards La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago. Check visibility and current visitor information before you go; on a cloudy or windy day, the view may be very different.

HOW TO MAKE A DAY OF IT

Rather than racing around all seven places in one day, choose a small group of nearby sights. El Golfo and Los Hervideros can work well together on the western side. Haría, Mirador del Río and the Cactus Garden fit into a northern exploration, but allow enough time for the drive and each stop.

If you do not have a hire car, check local bus routes, organised excursions or taxi options before setting off. Public transport can be less frequent outside the main resorts. Stick to marked paths, take rubbish with you, respect private property and never enter closed areas for a better photograph.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF LANZAROTE HOLIDAY

You do not have to give up your favourite beach or resort to discover more of the island. Even one day exploring villages, volcanic coastlines and local food can make your holiday feel completely different.
