Three-Year-Old Child Rescued From Sea at Papagayo Beach in Lanzarote
A three-year-old child has been taken to hospital after being rescued from the sea at Papagayo Beach in Lanzarote.
The incident happened on Saturday evening, 22 August 2026, at the popular Papagayo beach near Playa Blanca, in the municipality of Yaiza.
According to information from the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES 112), the emergency call was received at approximately 7:05pm after people at the beach rescued the young child from the water.
Child rescued by people on the beach
The child was brought out of the sea by other bathers before emergency services arrived.
Paramedics from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC) attended the child at the scene. The youngster was showing symptoms consistent with an incomplete drowning and was reported to have swallowed a significant amount of seawater.
After being assessed and stabilised by medical personnel, the child was taken by a medicalised ambulance to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife for further treatment and observation.
At the time of the initial medical assessment, the child’s condition was described as moderate. No further official update on the child’s condition had been released at the time of publication.
The Guardia Civil and Local Police also attended the incident and assisted with the emergency response.
Papagayo Beach: a popular Lanzarote attraction
Papagayo is one of the best-known beaches in Lanzarote and is particularly popular with tourists visiting Playa Blanca.
The area forms part of the Los Ajaches protected landscape and attracts thousands of visitors because of its clear water, golden sand and sheltered-looking coves.
However, like beaches elsewhere in Lanzarote, conditions in the sea can change quickly. Even when the water appears calm close to the shore, currents, waves and changes in depth can create risks, particularly for young children.
Water safety in Lanzarote
The incident comes during a summer in which Lanzarote has already seen several serious water-related emergencies.
Families visiting Lanzarote are encouraged to take extra care around the sea, particularly with young children.
Some simple precautions can make a major difference:
- Never leave young children unattended near the water, even for a moment.
- Stay close enough to physically reach a child who is playing in the sea.
- Pay attention to warning flags and local safety information.
- Don’t assume calm-looking water is necessarily safe.
- Be particularly careful around rocks, currents and areas where waves break.
- If conditions deteriorate, leave the water and move to a safe area.
- If somebody gets into difficulty, alert lifeguards or emergency services immediately.
- In an emergency in Lanzarote, call 112, the European emergency number used throughout Spain.
A reminder for tourists and residents
The rescue at Papagayo ended with the child receiving medical treatment rather than the incident becoming another drowning tragedy.
For families enjoying a Lanzarote holiday, Papagayo remains one of the island’s spectacular places to visit. But its natural environment should always be treated with respect.
