Tragedy at Punta Mujeres as Woman Dies While Swimming in Natural Pools

A woman has died after getting into difficulty while swimming off Punta Mujeres in the north of Lanzarote on Saturday, 5 September.

A tragic incident has occurred at the popular Punta Mujeres natural pools, with a woman of middle age dying after being pulled from the water shortly after 1pm. Emergency services were called after she was found showing signs of drowning and was subsequently found to be in cardiac arrest.

Emergency medical teams attended the scene and carried out resuscitation attempts, but sadly they were unable to save her. The Guardia Civil are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A much-loved part of northern Lanzarote

Punta Mujeres, in the municipality of Haría, is well known for its series of volcanic-rock natural pools and sheltered bathing areas. The coastline attracts both local residents and visitors looking to enjoy Lanzarote’s clear Atlantic waters away from the larger resort beaches.

The natural pools can appear calm and protected, but they remain connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Conditions can change quickly depending on the tide, swell and movement of the sea. Lanzarote’s tourism information also highlights the different levels of exposure among the natural bathing areas around Punta Mujeres.

A reminder to take care around Lanzarote’s natural pools

Today’s tragedy is a particularly sad reminder that even apparently sheltered natural swimming pools in Lanzarote should be treated with caution.

Visitors and residents are advised to check the sea conditions before entering the water, avoid swimming when waves are breaking over the rocks or into the pools, and take particular care when entering and leaving because volcanic rock can become extremely slippery.

Anyone who gets into difficulty in the water should seek help immediately and call 112, the emergency number in the Canary Islands.

At this stage, authorities have not released further details about the woman’s identity.

Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones at this very sad time.
