Used Car Prices Rise in the Canary Islands – What It Means for Drivers in Lanzarote

Buying a second-hand car in Lanzarote is becoming more expensive

Anyone looking to buy a used car in Lanzarote may have noticed that finding a reasonably priced vehicle is becoming more difficult.

New figures for August 2026 show that the average price of a second-hand passenger car in the Canary Islands reached €12,319, an increase of 5.8% compared with August last year.

However, there is an important distinction to make. Despite the rise, used cars in the Canary Islands remain cheaper on average than across Spain as a whole.

The national average reached €13,466, meaning the typical used car in the Canary Islands was still around €1,147 cheaper than the Spanish average.

For people living in Lanzarote, the figures provide an interesting snapshot of the wider Canary Islands second-hand car market, although the statistics are regional and should not be interpreted as a specific average price for Lanzarote.

Prices have risen faster in Canarias

The increase is particularly noticeable when compared with the rest of Spain.

Between August 2025 and August 2026, the average price of a used car in the Canary Islands increased by 5.8%.

Across Spain, the corresponding increase was 3.4%.

There was also a noticeable rise during the month itself. Compared with July 2026, the average price in Canarias increased by 1.9%, while the national increase was just 0.5%.

In other words, while second-hand cars in Lanzarote and the wider Canary Islands remain comparatively affordable, prices are currently moving upwards more quickly than the Spanish average.

Older cars are driving much of the increase

One of the most interesting parts of the latest figures concerns older vehicles.

Cars aged more than eight years accounted for 62.7% of used-car sales in the Canary Islands during August.

The average price for one of these older vehicles was €9,938, representing an 8.4% increase over August 2025.

That is a bigger annual increase than the overall used-car market.

Across Spain, cars over eight years old averaged €11,146, after rising by 6.7% over the year.

The figures underline something many motorists will already recognise: the cheaper end of the used car market in Lanzarote is not necessarily immune from price increases.

Older vehicles remain a major part of the market, but buyers are now paying more for them.

Why this matters in Lanzarote

For residents, a car is often an important part of everyday life in Lanzarote.

Although the island is relatively compact, getting around between places such as Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, Playa Honda and Yaiza is considerably easier with a vehicle.

Cars are also particularly important for people who work outside their immediate area, families, tradespeople and residents who regularly travel around the island.

That makes the price of a second-hand car in Lanzarote more than just an economic statistic.

For somebody working to a limited budget, an increase of several hundred euros can make a noticeable difference when replacing an older vehicle.

Canarias is still cheaper than the national average

Despite the recent increases, there is some good news for buyers.

The average used-car price in the Canary Islands remains below the Spanish average.

So while the Canary Islands used car market is becoming more expensive, it would be incorrect to suggest that buying a second-hand car here costs more than buying one elsewhere in Spain on average.

In fact, the latest figures show the opposite.

What should Lanzarote buyers look out for?

The regional average doesn’t tell the whole story.

Prices can vary substantially depending on the vehicle’s age, mileage, engine, condition, specification and history.

Anyone searching for used cars in Lanzarote should therefore avoid judging a vehicle purely by its asking price.

Before buying, it makes sense to check:

  • The vehicle’s ITV history
  • Service and maintenance records
  • Mileage and previous ownership
  • Accident or insurance history
  • Tyres, brakes and suspension
  • Air conditioning
  • Evidence of corrosion
  • The condition of the bodywork and interior
  • Whether the seller is a private individual or professional dealer

Lanzarote’s climate can also be a consideration. Vehicles exposed to strong sunshine, coastal air, salt and occasional calima can show signs of wear that aren’t always immediately obvious from photographs.

A proper inspection can therefore be particularly worthwhile when buying an older vehicle.

Is now a good time to buy a second-hand car in Lanzarote?

The latest figures don’t suggest that buyers should expect a sudden collapse in used-car prices.

Instead, the Canary Islands second-hand car market is currently experiencing gradual price pressure, with older vehicles showing particularly strong increases.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t bargains available.

It does mean that buyers should compare several vehicles rather than automatically assuming that an older car will be cheap.

For Lanzarote residents, checking local dealerships as well as private listings and being prepared to walk away from an overpriced vehicle could become increasingly important as the market changes.

The bottom line for Lanzarote drivers

The latest figures paint a fairly straightforward picture.

Used cars in the Canary Islands are getting more expensive, but they remain cheaper on average than in Spain as a whole.

The average price reached €12,319 in August 2026, up 5.8% in a year.

Older cars are particularly significant, accounting for nearly two-thirds of used-car sales in the islands and recording an 8.4% annual increase in their average price.

For anyone looking for a second-hand car in Lanzarote, the message is simple: there are still opportunities to find good-value vehicles, but the days when an older used car automatically meant a low price are becoming harder to take for granted.

And with prices continuing to move upwards, doing your homework before buying could save you considerably more than simply choosing the cheapest car you can find.
