Washing Machine Fire in Playa Quemada Extinguished by Lanzarote Firefighters
Firefighters were called to a home in Playa Quemada, in the municipality of Yaiza, on Friday morning after a washing machine caught fire inside the property.
The incident took place at a house on Calle Risco Prieto. The emergency services were alerted at approximately 8.19am on 9 October, prompting firefighters from the southern station of Lanzarote’s Consorcio de Seguridad y Emergencias to attend.
Fire located in the bathroom
On arrival, firefighters found that the fire was in the bathroom and involved the washing machine. They used a fine water spray to extinguish the flames before ventilating the property to clear the smoke that had built up inside.
After the fire was under control, the damaged washing machine was removed from the house and the team carried out final checks to make sure the area was safe.
Dog escapes from nearby property
During the response, local police asked firefighters to check a neighbouring home because there were concerns that a dog might have been trapped or affected by smoke. The animal was able to get out by itself, so the firefighters did not need to use their ventilation equipment to rescue it.
No further details about injuries or the full extent of the damage were included in the reports available at the time of writing.
A reminder about household fire safety in Lanzarote
The incident is a reminder that household appliances can pose a fire risk if they develop a fault. Residents and holidaymakers staying in villas, apartments or holiday rentals in Lanzarote should avoid running washing machines or tumble dryers when nobody is at home, keep appliances and surrounding areas free from clutter, and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance advice.
If an appliance begins smoking or catches fire, do not put yourself at risk trying to tackle it. Get everyone out, close the door behind you if it is safe to do so, and call the emergency services on 112 in the Canary Islands.
The fire was dealt with by Lanzarote’s emergency crews, who also checked the neighbouring property during the response.
