Woman Rescued After Becoming Stranded at Playa del Risco

A rescue operation was launched this week after a woman became stranded at Playa del Risco, one of Lanzarote’s most spectacular yet challenging beaches, when she was unable to make the steep climb back up the Camino de los Gracioseros.

Emergency services were called after the visitor found herself unable to continue the ascent from the remote beach at the foot of the Famara cliffs. According to emergency reports, the woman, an Italian national, had recently undergone back surgery and was physically unable to complete the demanding climb. She was reported to be in good health but unable to continue safely.

Firefighters reached Playa del Risco and assessed the situation before arranging for the woman to be evacuated by boat to La Graciosa, where she could receive further assistance. Due to the isolated location of the beach, evacuations by sea are often the safest option when visitors are unable to return via the cliff path.

Playa del Risco: Beautiful but Demanding

Playa del Risco is regarded as one of Lanzarote’s most unspoilt beaches, offering stunning views across the water to La Graciosa. However, reaching it requires tackling the Camino de los Gracioseros, a historic zig-zag trail descending the towering Famara cliffs.

Although many experienced walkers complete the route without difficulty, the descent can be deceptive. The climb back to the top is considerably more demanding, particularly during warm weather or for anyone with limited mobility or underlying health conditions.

The trail is rocky, uneven and exposed, with very little shade along the route. Emergency services are called to the area several times each year to assist hikers suffering from exhaustion, injury or heat-related illnesses.

Safety Advice for Visitors

If you’re planning to visit Playa del Risco, it’s worth taking a few precautions:

  • Be realistic about your fitness level before attempting the walk.
  • Avoid the hottest part of the day, especially during summer.
  • Carry plenty of drinking water.
  • Wear suitable walking shoes with good grip.
  • Let someone know where you’re going if walking alone.
  • If you’ve recently had surgery or have mobility issues, consider enjoying the spectacular views from the top of the Famara cliffs instead.

A Reminder to Respect Lanzarote’s Natural Landscapes

The north of Lanzarote offers some of the island’s most breathtaking scenery, but its rugged terrain deserves respect. While Playa del Risco remains a favourite with adventurous walkers and photographers, visitors should carefully assess whether they are physically prepared for the return climb before making the descent.

Fortunately, in this latest incident, emergency responders were able to bring the woman to safety without serious injury. The rescue serves as another reminder that even experienced visitors can find themselves in difficulty on one of Lanzarote’s most demanding walking routes.
