Woman Rescued After Fall on Rocks at Las Coloradas Beach in Playa Blanca

A woman was taken to hospital after suffering a painful fall in a rocky area at Las Coloradas beach in Playa Blanca on Monday evening.

Emergency services were called to Las Coloradas beach in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, on the evening of Monday, 31 August, following reports that a woman had fallen among the rocks close to the shoreline.

The incident happened at around 6:30–6:40pm, with the emergency response coordinated through the Canary Islands’ CECOES 112 emergency service. Local Police, firefighters from the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium and medical personnel from the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC) attended the scene.

Woman suffered severe knee pain

When emergency personnel reached the woman, she was in a rocky area beside the water and was experiencing significant pain in her right knee. Other reports describe a possible knee fracture, although the initial information does not confirm a final diagnosis.

Because of the location of the accident, firefighters worked alongside the medical team to safely move her from the rocks.

A splint was applied to the injured leg, after which the woman was carefully transferred using a rescue board to the ambulance stretcher. Once inside the ambulance, she was placed on a vacuum mattress to help keep her stable during transportation.

She was subsequently taken by ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife for further medical assessment and treatment.

Rocky areas around Lanzarote beaches require care

While Las Coloradas beach is a popular part of the Playa Blanca coastline, the incident is also a reminder that Lanzarote’s volcanic coastline can present very different conditions from the sandy beaches visitors may be accustomed to.

Las Coloradas is a roughly 410-metre beach made up of sand, gravel and rounded stones, rather than being entirely sandy. Official Spanish tourism information describes the beach as having generally calm bathing conditions and relatively easy access.

However, walking across rocks and uneven coastal ground can still present a risk of slips, trips and falls, particularly close to the water.

For tourists exploring Playa Blanca and the south of Lanzarote, sensible footwear and extra care around rocky sections of coastline can make a significant difference. Rocks can also become slippery when wet, even when the surrounding sea conditions appear calm.

Emergency response in Lanzarote

The incident demonstrates the coordinated response available when someone gets into difficulty in Lanzarote. CECOES 112 can mobilise the appropriate emergency services, including firefighters, police and medical teams, depending on the circumstances.

For anyone living in Lanzarote or visiting the island, 112 is the emergency number to call when urgent assistance is required.

For residents and visitors in Playa Blanca, the incident is a useful reminder to take care around Lanzarote’s volcanic coastline, particularly when walking across rocks or uneven ground near the sea.
