Woman Rescued After Fall on Rocky Coast of Órzola, Lanzarote
A 70-year-old woman was rescued by firefighters after suffering multiple injuries in a fall on the north coast of Lanzarote near Órzola on Friday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the incident at around 1:15pm on Friday, September 11, after the woman was injured in a coastal area close to Órzola in the municipality of Haría.
The location presented a particular challenge for rescuers because of the difficult access across the rocky coastal terrain.
Firefighters carry out coastal rescue in Órzola
Following the emergency alert, firefighters from the North Park, officers from the Local Police and a basic life support ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were sent to the area.
Firefighters reached the injured woman and carried out the rescue from the difficult-to-access location. She was placed on a stretcher and carefully transported to the waiting ambulance.
The woman, who was around 70 years old, had suffered multiple traumas as a result of the fall.
Once she had been reached by the emergency teams, healthcare personnel provided initial medical assistance before she was taken by ambulance to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife for further treatment.
Rocky coastline highlights the importance of taking care around Lanzarote
The incident is also a reminder for both Lanzarote residents and visitors to the island that some of the coastline around Órzola can be challenging to navigate.
The north of Lanzarote is particularly popular with walkers, photographers and tourists heading towards Órzola and the ferry connection to La Graciosa. Away from developed paths and roads, however, sections of the volcanic coastline consist of uneven lava rock and can have difficult access for emergency vehicles.
A seemingly minor slip or trip in these areas can therefore become more serious if someone is injured in a location that is difficult for an ambulance to reach.
Visitors exploring the Órzola coastline are advised to take care on uneven ground, wear suitable footwear and avoid getting too close to exposed coastal edges, particularly when conditions are windy or the sea is rough.
Emergency services respond quickly
The successful rescue involved several emergency services working together, with firefighters responsible for reaching the woman in the inaccessible coastal area and transferring her to the ambulance.
She was subsequently taken to Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote for medical attention.
No further information about her condition has been released in the report currently available, so there is no reliable basis at this stage for speculating about the severity of her injuries or her subsequent recovery.
Staying safe while exploring Lanzarote
Órzola and the surrounding Haría area are among the most scenic parts of northern Lanzarote, but the island’s volcanic landscape can be deceptively rugged.
For anyone enjoying Lanzarote walks, coastal paths and outdoor activities, sticking to recognised routes and being aware of the terrain can help reduce the risk of falls. It is also worth remembering that emergency access can be considerably more difficult on isolated sections of the coast than it would be in an urban or resort area.
If an accident does occur, 112 is the emergency number in the Canary Islands.
