Yaiza Introduces Talking Recycling Points in Innovative Bid to Keep Streets Cleaner
Residents and visitors in Yaiza, Lanzarote, may notice something unusual the next time they dispose of their rubbish. Selected recycling and waste collection points across the municipality are now fitted with an audio system that thanks people for using the correct bins, as part of a pioneering initiative designed to encourage better recycling habits and reduce littering.
The pilot scheme, believed to be the first of its kind in the Canary Islands, has been operating for around three months and is already showing encouraging signs in areas that have traditionally experienced problems with rubbish being left outside containers.
How the New System Works
When someone approaches one of the equipped recycling points, the system plays a short recorded message reminding users to place their waste inside the correct container. The aim is to encourage responsible recycling of:
- Organic waste
- Paper and cardboard
- Glass
- Plastic packaging
The municipality hopes that these friendly reminders will help improve recycling habits while reducing the amount of waste left on pavements and around collection points.
Cameras Installed Alongside Audio Messages
The new installations also include integrated cameras, which form part of Yaiza’s wider efforts to discourage antisocial behaviour around waste collection areas.
According to local officials, the cameras are intended to help tackle persistent problems such as illegal dumping and rubbish being left outside containers, which can create unpleasant conditions for residents and visitors alike. The audio announcements are switched off during the night to minimise disturbance, although motion-activated lighting continues to operate when someone approaches the containers.
Fines for Leaving Rubbish Outside Containers
The reminder messages also reinforce that leaving rubbish outside public bins is prohibited.
Under Yaiza’s local regulations, individuals found illegally depositing waste beside containers can face fines of up to €3,000, depending on the seriousness of the offence. The council hopes that combining education with enforcement will encourage greater respect for public spaces.
Early Results Encouraging
The council says the pilot has already led to improvements in some of the municipality’s most problematic locations, where overflowing rubbish and illegally dumped waste had become a recurring issue.
If positive results continue, the authority plans to study additional locations with the possibility of expanding the system to more container sites across Yaiza.
Part of a Bigger Investment in Cleaning Services
The audio project forms part of a broader strategy to improve waste management across the municipality.
At the same time, Yaiza is evaluating bids for a new long-term waste collection contract worth approximately €36 million over the next ten years. The proposed service would cover the collection of household waste, organic material, used cooking oil, bulky items, electrical appliances, garden waste and the introduction of additional mobile recycling facilities.
What It Means for Residents and Tourists
For many visitors to Lanzarote, the talking recycling points may come as a surprise, but they reflect the island’s growing focus on keeping public areas clean and encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour.
Whether you’re a resident or enjoying a holiday in Playa Blanca, Puerto Calero or elsewhere in the municipality, using the correct recycling containers and avoiding leaving rubbish beside bins helps keep Lanzarote looking its best for everyone.
