Young Driver Injured After Vehicle Overturns Near Papagayo, Playa Blanca
A young driver was taken to hospital after his vehicle overturned on the access road leading to the Papagayo beaches in southern Lanzarote on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the incident at approximately 4:34pm after receiving reports of a car that had left the road and flipped onto its roof near the entrance to Playa Mujeres, one of the access points to the popular Papagayo Natural Monument area.
Driver Escapes the Vehicle
According to emergency responders, the driver was the only person inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. Before firefighters arrived, he had already managed to get out of the overturned car without assistance.
The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) assessed and treated the injured driver at the scene before arranging onward medical care. As the occupant had already exited the vehicle, firefighters did not need to carry out a rescue operation.
Firefighters Made the Area Safe
Once the Guardia Civil authorised the recovery operation, firefighters carefully returned the vehicle to an upright position. They then disconnected the battery as a precaution to reduce the risk of fire or electrical hazards while the damaged vehicle was recovered.
Officers from the Guardia Civil and Playa Blanca Local Police also attended the scene, managing traffic and carrying out the initial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Accident Under Investigation
At the time of writing, the exact cause of the accident has not been confirmed. Authorities have not released further information regarding how the vehicle left the roadway, and investigations remain ongoing.
Advice for Drivers Visiting Papagayo
The access road to the Papagayo beaches is well used by both residents and tourists, particularly during the summer months. Drivers should be aware that some sections can be uneven, dusty and loose under the tyres, making extra care advisable, especially when travelling in unfamiliar conditions.
Reducing speed, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles and remaining alert can help improve safety on this popular route to one of Lanzarote’s most visited coastal areas.
