Young Man Found Deceased Behind Stage During Los Dolores Celebrations in Lanzarote

A 24-year-old man from Arrecife has been found dead in Mancha Blanca during the celebrations for the Virgen de Los Dolores. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
A tragic incident has cast a shadow over the Fiestas de Los Dolores in Lanzarote, after the body of a 24-year-old man was discovered in the area behind the main stage in Mancha Blanca, Tinajo, on Sunday evening.
The young man, who was from Arrecife, was found at approximately 6:30pm on Sunday, September 13, while the area was still hosting events connected with the annual Los Dolores celebrations, one of the most important traditional festivals on the island.
According to reports, several local residents discovered the man and alerted the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES).
An advanced medicalised ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) and members of the Guardia Civil attended the scene. The area was secured while the circumstances surrounding the death were investigated.

Police investigation underway

The Guardia Civil Judicial Police is investigating the incident and is examining available security camera footage in an effort to establish exactly what happened.
At this stage, authorities have not confirmed the cause of death.
Radio Televisión Canaria reports that investigators are currently ruling out violence as the cause, although the investigation remains ongoing.

Incident happened during the Los Dolores festivities

The discovery came during one of the busiest weekends of the year in Mancha Blanca, as thousands of people had gathered for the traditional Romería de Los Dolores and associated celebrations.
The annual festivities honour Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores, also known as the Virgin of the Volcanoes, and attract residents from across Lanzarote as well as visitors interested in experiencing one of the island's most important cultural traditions.
The traditional pilgrimage took place on Saturday, with large numbers of people making their way towards the sanctuary at Mancha Blanca.

A sad end to a Lanzarote celebration

The Fiestas de Los Dolores are normally a time when Lanzarote comes together to celebrate its history, traditions, music and religious heritage.
For many residents, the news has understandably brought sadness to what would otherwise have been a weekend of celebration in Mancha Blanca, Tinajo.
Visitors currently staying in Lanzarote should be informed that this is being treated as an individual incident.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the man´s family and friends at this time.
