Halloween events cancelled across the Canary Islands

A number of much-anticipated Halloween celebrations and traditional autumn events across the Canary Islands have been cancelled or postponed following Spain’s declaration of three days of official mourning after a fatal railway accident in Toledo. The period of national mourning runs from Thursday 29 October until midnight on Saturday 31 October. In response, several island councils and public institutions have suspended events scheduled during those dates as a mark of respect for the people who lost their lives, their loved ones and everyone affected by the tragedy. For residents and holidaymakers, the result is a changing Halloween events calendar. Some municipal celebrations have been cancelled, some are being considered for new dates, and other events have not yet had a clear update. It is important not to assume that every party or private event across the islands has been called off.

Lanzarote: public Halloween and Finaos events affected

On Lanzarote, several local authorities have suspended festive and cultural programmes during the official mourning period. The affected municipalities include Arrecife, Tías, Teguise, Tinajo and Haría, alongside activities organised by the island Cabildo and its Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism. In the municipality of Tías, the changes affect the advertised Halloween programme in Puerto del Carmen and Tías. The planned Puerto del Carmen street parade will not go ahead, and the programme in Tías, including its Saturday Halloween activities, has also been suspended. The traditional Noche de Finaos gatherings planned in several municipalities have been affected too. In Playa Blanca, Yaiza Town Hall has confirmed that its municipal Halloween programme planned for Saturday 31 October in Plaza del Carmen is suspended. Arrecife has also suspended municipal events during the three days, although its traditional market in Plaza de Las Palmas is reported to be continuing. Teguise has indicated that it may move some cultural activities to Sunday 1 November, but a new date should not be treated as confirmed until the council publishes an update. Residents and visitors should check the relevant town hall’s official channels before travelling.

What is happening on the other Canary Islands?

The changes are not limited to Lanzarote. Reports from across the archipelago describe municipal Halloween parties, family activities and traditional Finaos celebrations being cancelled or postponed in parts of Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura. On Gran Canaria, several municipalities have suspended public festivities during the mourning period. Some events are being reviewed for possible rearrangement, while others have been cancelled without a replacement date being announced. In Gáldar, some cultural activities have been moved to Sunday 1 November and Monday 2 November, according to local reporting. On Tenerife, councils have also reviewed public Halloween and cultural programmes. The position differs between municipalities and individual events, so visitors should look for a specific announcement from the organiser rather than assume that all activities are cancelled. On Fuerteventura, the family Halloween programme advertised for Corralejo has been reported as moved from Saturday to Sunday 1 November. Anyone planning to attend should confirm the revised programme and timings with the organisers before setting off.

Why have the celebrations been suspended?

The decisions follow a serious railway accident near Urda in the province of Toledo on Wednesday 28 October. The tragedy prompted the Spanish Government to declare three days of official mourning. Local authorities across the Canary Islands have joined the period of mourning and expressed their condolences. The event cancellations are therefore a mark of respect and solidarity. They are not related to a Halloween safety alert or a change in the islands’ weather forecast.

Does official mourning mean all Halloween parties are cancelled?

No. The suspension of municipal events does not automatically mean that every private Halloween party, restaurant event, hotel celebration or independently organised activity has been cancelled. Decisions depend on the organiser and, where relevant, the local authority. If you have booked a ticketed event, most private events so far seem to be going ahead, contact the venue or ticket provider directly to ask whether it is going ahead, postponed or cancelled and whether a refund or transfer is available. If you are staying in Lanzarote or visiting another island, check the town hall’s website or social media on the day before travelling to a public event. Sunday 1 November is outside the three-day national mourning period. Some postponed activities may take place then, but only rely on a new date once it has been confirmed by the organiser.

A note for visitors spending Halloween in Lanzarote

The announcements concern specific public programmes rather than a general closure of tourist areas. Restaurants, hotels and private businesses may have their own arrangements. If your holiday plans included a municipal Halloween parade, family event or Noche de Finaos celebration, take a moment to check the latest local notice before heading out. We will continue to follow confirmed announcements from the island’s councils and event organisers and update this information if further changes are published.
